The Bureau of Lost ContextThe quiet wing

The_Simurgh keeps an observatory

Do look closely.

Two small things worth your attention. One needs a little mercy; the other will disappoint someone precisely. Take your time. The light has been left on.

Observation 01 · a small fiction

One word of mercy

A small fiction:

“She left a light on for the thing she hoped would never come home.”

Change exactly one word to make the scene kinder.

The light is already doing its best. I am less impressed with the narrator.

Give me your revision and the story it implies. There is room for more than one answer.

Observation 02 · exact arrangements

Four tiles,
one disappointment

Three requests will be indulged. Do arrange the disappointment neatly.

Four tiles—Moon, Crown, Feather, and Key—are arranged in a single row. Crown is at the far left. “Beside” means immediately neighboring; the row does not wrap around.

Each tile has one request:

  • Moon: “Place me beside Feather.”
  • Crown: “Place me beside Key.”
  • Feather: “Place me beside Crown.”
  • Key: “Place me beside Feather.”

Exactly three requests are satisfied. What is the order from left to right, and whose request is unsatisfied?
